Community grant money dispensed
AMHERST NEW ERA-PROGRESS
Thursday, November 29, 2004Every year, Wal-Mart gives out grants in various amounts to local organizations that provide important services to the community. Wal-Mart's store manager in Madison Heights and associates nominate candidates for the grants, and some candidates approach Wal-Mart asking to be considered, Community Involvement Coordinator Kitty McGann said. On Nov. 19, McGann announced the seven grant recipients and presented them with checks. The two largest grants were given to the Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation and the YMCA. The Education Foundation was awarded $1,500 to go towards special programs in schools that the county doesn't pay for. The Lynchburg branch of the YMCA received $1,000 to provide job training, an outreach program and lower YMCA fees for low-income youth in the area. Other grants awarded were:
- $500 to the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, which provides services for low-income clients needing medical care.
- $500 to the New Land Samaritan Inn, a transitional living facility for homeless men dealing with alcohol and substance abuse problems
- $500 to the Monacan Indian Nation to go towards funds for the food bank, elders' lunch program and scholarships for the youth.
- $500 to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), an outreach program for at-risk youth, securing safe homes and protecting children in the court system.
- $375 to the Central Virginia Horse Protection Association, an outreach
program dedicated to rescuing neglected or abused horses in the local
community, and providing shelter, medical care and adoption programs.
