NEW DENTAL SUITE SCHEDULED TO OPEN

The new six operatory “unnamed” dental suite on the middle floor of the Free Clinic is nearing completion. It is anticipated that carpeting, flooring, and the brand new equipment will be installed in December. After some “test runs”, the equipment from the three operatories on the main floor will be moved down to the new location. We will operate all six operatories on the middle floor by early January.

The funding for the new dental equipment is provided by a $100,000 grant from the Centra Health Foundation. The Free Clinic has matched this amount with over $100,000 from a number of sources. These include so far: $ 50,000 from the Free Clinic Reserve Funds, $35,000 in newly raised funds from the dental community some “key” and flooring from Carpetland USA, and $10,000 in donated dental equipment from Dr. Ralph Slusher of Appomattox, Dr. Brian McAvoy of Lychburg, and the Patterson Dental Company of Richmond. Other donations are still being received as the construction component of the project will run over $140,000.

As indicated in the Summer 2006 Newsletter, the “From Three to Six in 2006” Campaign will enable the Free Clinic to double its number of annual patient visits from about 2,000 per year to 4,000 per year. It will enable the clinic to reach out and provide dental services to more different individuals, and it will allow us to look at the expansion of hours and the type of services that are provided.

Finally, a formal dedication of the new facility will be held on a future date to be determined at the clinic.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE HOME TOUR

At a luncheon at the Trinity Ecumenical Church in Moneta on November 16, the Free Clinic represented by Dr. Pete Warren and others was presented with a generous check of $22,000 to be used to support the general operating budget. These funds were the Free Clinic’s share of the “income over expense” generated by the 2006 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Gala and Home Tour for the fourth time in the past five years. This amount is very significant to the budgetary obligations of the clinic, and it is greatly appreciated!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS

Kathryn Mays, Vice President, was appointed in October to succeed Abigail Haney as President of the Board. Kathryn and her husband, Mitchell, have lived in Lynchburg for many years. She is the retired Director of the Women’s Resource Center.

Charles “Chuck” Haney was also appointed in October to succeed his wife, Abigail, as a member of the Board of Directors. Chuck is retired U.S. Navy with expertise in computers, human services, and boating.

Kathleen “Kathy” Graves, Vice President with SunTrust Bank, was appointed in November to serve as a member of the Board of Directors to fill and uncompleted term. Her financial expertise will be a tremendous asset to the Board.

20TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2007

The Free Clinic will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding and opening in the year 2007. In order to commemorate this significant anniversary, a planning committee has already started to work on a schedule of events for the year.

A monthly Board of Directors meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 just three days away from the 1987 date of the very first Board Meeting at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The clinic itself existed from 1987 to 1992 in the basement of this church on Floyd Street.

During the summer months, we will schedule celebratory events in Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell Counties. This is very relevant due to the fact that so many of our patients live in the counties and many residents of the counties provide major financial support to the Free Clinic.

Throughout the 20th Anniversary Year the Board will conduct a special fund raising drive, which will provide an additional $200,000 for the Free Clinic Endowment Fund. The anniversary events will conclude on October 19 or 20, 2007 with a large dinner and major event at the new Bluffwalk Hotel on Commerce Street.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT

Jane Ayers is the Office Manager / Program Manager at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia. She has worked at the Free Clinic in several difficult capacities since 1994. She is currently the longest serving employee! Jane is a very smart and diligent worker who was awarded the United Way’s Nancy L. Sorrels Memorial Award in 2003 for her outstanding work with a non-profit agency. Jane’s husband Leroy, and her four adult children (Leroy who is also known as “Bubba,” Becky, Liz, and William) have all supported her never-ending work to provide necessary health services to needy Central Virginians. To some board members and many college student volunteers, Jane is also known as the “Mother Superior” at the Free Clinic.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT

Cindy McInteer, RPH, has volunteered at the Free Clinic since it was opened in 1987. She was a pharmacist when the clinic was housed in the basement of Westminster-Presbyterian Church on Floyd Street. She served as our Pharmacist-In-Charge (PIC) from 1987-1995. Her husband, Bill, is also a pharmacist. She works full-time at CVS on Timberlake Road. We are fortunate to have her on our team.

SPECIAL FRIEND HIGHLIGHT

We miss our special friend, Morris Jefferson, who tended our parking lot for over almost four years. With the sale of the lot to new owners, he is currently unemployed. He writes and recites poetry. He is well educated, polite, and a pleasure to be around. He always helped us with those little “extra jobs” that we needed help with. He greeted our patients with a smile and a warm greeting! We hope to have you back here soon!

FREE CLINIC AWARDED FOUR SPECIAL GRANTS

The Free Clinic of Central Virginia at 1016 Main Street in Lynchburg has been the recent recipient of four major grants from area Foundations.

The Plymale Foundation has given a special $5,000 grant to support the construction work on six new dental operatories on the middle floor of the clinic. This “From Three to Six” building campaign is designed to double the number of patient visit slots for dental services from 2,000 to 4,000 per year.

The Genworth Foundation has also provided a second grant of $5,000 to continue its support of the Breast Health Program. These funds will enable the clinic to provide educational programs, examinations, and mammograms for patients through September 2007.

Delta Dental, Inc. of Roanoke has renewed its operating funding of the Daytime Dental Service Program with a third grant of $10,000. This donation helps pay for the supplies and other expenses for the on-going partnership with the VCU School of Dentistry to staff the crucial program.

Finally, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Richmond has recently awarded another $10,000 grant to be used for the general operating budget in 2007.

Individuals who wish to support the operating expenses for these programs can send tax deductible designated donations to the Free Clinic.
