Nelson Satellite Dental Clinic Opens On March 7, The Free Clinic of Central Virginia (FCCV) and the Blue Ridge Medical Center (BRMC), a federally funded community health center, jointly opened a new Dental Clinic Satellite in Nelson County. The partnership is a “first” in the Commonwealth of Virginia between a Free Clinic and a Community Health Center. Dr Mike Sherwood is the volunteer Dentist and Peggy Saunders is the Dental Assistant. BRMC provided the dental trailer facility and the site. They have done all the important work to get things physically “set up”. The FCCV operates the facility with one volunteer dentist and one paid dental assistant on Wednesday and Friday mornings in order to get things started. The FCCV has also arranged through its discount sources to acquire the basic supplies needed on site and provide liability insurance. It is hoped that additional providers
and hours will develop in the months ahead. The long-range plan will be
for BRMC to build and operate its own permanent facility within one-two
years. |

Edgar Allen Womack “Steps Forward” The late Mr. Allen Womack, retired president of BWXT, “stepped forward”
recently to make the Free Clinic the beneficiary of a $30,000 donation. Mr.
Womack passed away on Saturday, February 23. Ironically, this is the day of
our annual Loft Tour Reception, where we recognize outstanding community
supporters with Eleanor Taylor Community Supporter Awards. He will be
recognized posthumously with this award, and his name will be added to this
plaque at the Free Clinic. This gift was unrestricted; it will be used in
the general operating budget. A gift of this magnitude enables the Free
Clinic to provide $300,000 worth of medical, dental, and pharmaceutical
services to needy Central Virginians. This is accomplished thanks to 200
physicians, 60 dentists, 120 dental students, and 30-40 pharmacists and
pharmacy technicians who donate their services worth $2.4 million to the
Free Clinic each year!!!!! |

The Campaign Goes On! The 2007 20th Anniversary Endowment Campaign is being continued until the end of the 2007-2008 fiscal year, which is June 30, 2008. Led by two anonymous leadership donations of $10,000 from a friend of the Free Clinic and $5,000 from a member of the Board of Directors, the amount raised so far is $28,500. Over 40 different individuals have made contributions ranging from $20 to $2,000 specifically for the endowment. These donations have been in addition to the donor’s “regular” donations to the Free Clinic. A plaque bearing the names of these supporters has been erected in the Elizabeth Forsythe Hallway. Names will be added as additional donations are received between now and June 30, 2008. Please consider making your special one-time restricted gift to the Endowment Fund. |

MORE ELIGIBILITY SCREENERS RECOGNIZED In this spring edition, we would like to recognize three more volunteer eligibility screeners. Mrs. Jim Kiger (Sandy) has served as an eligibility screener two evenings per month for 10 years!!! She comes over to the clinic after working her FT job in the Lynchburg Superintendent of Schools office. Our Tuesday morning eligibility screeners are Mrs. Donald Holcomb (Alice) and Lester Jones. Alice has volunteered for three years on a weekly basis and Les has just completed his first year after retiring from a professional position as parole officer. Alice’s husband, Don, is a twenty-year volunteer dentist. Les’ wife, Jacqui, works FT at LYNCAG, a partner agency of the Free Clinic. In the winter edition, we previously recognized Marian Stump (6 years) and Peggy Berger (5 years) for their service on Thursday Mornings. The Free Clinic always has a need for “trained” eligibility screeners! |

ADDITIONAL 20-YEAR VOLUNTEERS As part of the Free Clinic’s 20th Anniversary activities, an effort was made to recognize all 20-year volunteers!!!! Well, we missed a couple!!!!! This is the danger when you try to put together a list. The following individuals were not properly recognized either at the banquet itself and/or in the Winter Newsletter listing. We would like to add our special applause for their long support to Bobby Bishop, Roy Lee Garrett, Dr. Daniel Grabeel, Cynthia Hendricks, Rick Klein, and Dr. Sherman Smock. |

THREE NEW STAFF MEMBERS Over the past three months, we have added three new, regular staff members to our team. Edith “Edie” Light, who was acting as Special Events/Development Coordinator in Fall 2007, was appointed in December to the position on a FT, permanent basis. Edie brings a wealth of experience in Lynchburg, a long-time passion for the Free Clinic, and a wonderful, positive attitude to her work. Hanna Buurrus, R.N., who has worked and/or volunteered at the Free Clinic for twenty years has rejoined us as a PT nurse on Mondays. She has great empathy for our patients, and she is always ready to take on extra duties. She will also remain a member of the GAS Team with Dr. Bob Richards’ clinics. Tracey Madden, CPhT, RPhT, has joined the team as Medication Access Caseworker at the Bedford MedsHelp Satellite office. She and her husband moved to Altavista from New York recently; She works FT at CVS. |

FCCV SURPLUSES GIVEN TO OTHERS The Free Clinic of Central Virginia (FCCV) continues to give its surpluses to others. In FY 2006-2007, the FCCV received $2.3 million worth of donated medications. We “ONLY” dispensed $2.1 million to our patients (almost 30,000 prescriptions)!! Where did the other $200,000 go? It went to clinics without the generous resources that we have here in Lynchburg in Biloxi, Mississippi and Gulfport, Louisiana that are still trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina. It also went on mission trips to Mexico, Nicaragua, and other countries.that were conducted by Central Virginia medical providers. Finally, it went to some Free Clinics in Virginia who had great needs. Where does our surplus medical equipment go? We do provide our patients with free braces, canes, walkers, bed pans, bath tub rails, wheelchairs, and sometimes even motorized carts. When we have surpluses in this area, it is donated to FREE of Lynchburg or Gleaning for the World. |

LOCAL GRANTS RECEIVED The Free Clinic has again been the beneficiary of four local grants from area foundations. In December, the Burruss Family Foundation donated $9,000 to be used for general operating costs. This was followed up in January with a $3,000 grant from the Retail Merchants Foundation to be also used in the operating area. Delta Dental, Inc., which is headquartered in Roanoke, contributed $3,355 in January for dental supplies to be used in the daytime dental program. Finally, the Genworth Financial Foundation has earmarked a $5,000 donation to help provide mammograms for Free Clinic patients. |

LOFT TOUR VERY SUCCESSFUL The Fourth Annual Downtown Lynchburg Loft Tour, which was held on Saturday, February 23rd was extremely successful. Approximately 450 persons visited the nine new loft apartments and the two “returning” lofts. Highlights of the tour included Roger & Winston Green’s spectacular loft on Church Street in the Frye Building and THREE new City Market Lofts, which are now 85% occupied. Although the final figures have not been tabulated at this time, we expect that nearly $8,000 will be raised from the tour. |
