MedsHelp Program to Expand
(Shannon Franklin, Coordinator)

After completing five months as a program merged into the operation of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, the MedsHelp Program is showing STRONG signs of programmatic and financial stability. In fact the program will be grown by 200 patients between now and June 30, 2005. Contacting persons on the current waiting list and/or referring current free clinic patients, who need assistance in acquiring medications, will accomplish this expansion.

If the next 4 months continue to move forward positively, the program will be expanded by another 300 patients in the last six months of 2005. This would bring the total number of patients enrolled in the program back up to over 1,000. This will be accomplished by contacting physicians, who volunteer at the clinic, and other partners for direct referrals. In 2006, we hope to further expand the enrollment in the program through controlled methods and numbers, which are to be determined.

The new Coordinator of the MedsHelp Program, Shannon Franklin, believes that the potential for expansion is huge and that MedsHelp will become one of the best medication assistance programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

MedsHelp Donations

There has been some confusion about the method for making donations to MedsHelp. As an independent program within the offerings of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, you can still support the MedsHelp program independently and/or with your gift to the Free Clinic. We still need your support for MedsHelp AND the Free Clinic overall operation itself. You can do this by writing two checks (one to the MedsHelp Program and one to the Free Clinic). Or if you prefer, you can write one check to either organization and/or designate the gift amount to be divided 50-50 between MedsHelp and the Free Clinic. We sincerely hope that you will continue to support both the Free Clinic and the MedsHelp Program at the same or an increased $ level! THANK YOU!

UNITED WAY DAY OF CARING

On Wednesday, May 25, the Free Clinic will host volunteer work teams gathered by the United Way of Central Virginia to accomplish necessary maintenance work and major projects at the clinic. The FC staff will identify the projects and volunteers from many Central Virginia businesses will complete the actual work. A highlight of the event is a free lunch for all participants sponsored by Outback Steakhouse and held at Riverside Park.

SPECIALTY MEDICAL CLINIC/SERVICES ADDED

The Free Clinic has been able to add a specialty clinic in Neurology on the first Tuesday of each month. It is conducted by Dr. Charles Joseph or another member of his practice. Volunteers who will be staffing for him will be Tracy Baker, R.N. and Marcia Accordino, Lab Technician. Marianne Storton, R.N. will be the charge nurse.

There are now two options for nutrition counseling. Mary Beth Rank, R.N., MSN, CDE and Lesley MePhatter, nutrition counselor, are now available for sessions with patients. Both volunteer with the Free Clinic once per month.

LOFT TOUR SUCCESSFUL

The first annual Downtown Lynchburg Loft Tour was held on Saturday, February 26, 2005. This activity was designed to raise operating funds for the clinic, and it resulted in over 220 participants including 185 paid "tourists." This number translated into $3,700 raised for the Free Clinic.

HARRINGTON and TAYLOR "TRIBUTES"

At the reception following the Loft Tour on February 26, the Free Clinic recognized the distinguished financial support for the under and uninsured from Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Harrington and Mr. and Mrs. James D. Taylor. The Program Manager's office was dedicated "In Memory of Donald Weber Harrington" and the Laboratory was dedicated "In Memory of James D. Taylor". Suitable permanent plaques were "unveiled" by Ms. Pat Harrington and Ms. Eleanor Taylor, who survive their husbands.

The reception was catered by the Academy Café (Susan Peverill - Owner) and the Depot Grill (Dave Poole - Owner). The Free Clinic staff members coordinated the event, which was attended by about 100 persons.
