ELEANOR TAYLOR Eleanor Jordan Taylor passed away on July 16. She was a very modest and private woman, who would not allow me to publicize her generosity toward those in need of medical, dental, and pharmaceutical care in Central Virginia during her lifetime. However, her caring, empathetic nature resulted in her donation of over $100,000 to the clinic in the past five years. She is survived by her son, Richard James Taylor and his wife, and her daughter Anne Wynne Taylor, and her husband. She was very active in a number of organizations in the Lynchburg community and at Westminster-Presbyterian Church. She will be greatly missed. Her husband, James David Taylor, is memorialized with a plaque in the Free Clinic lab which she visited several times. The Board of Directors has voted to remember Eleanor Taylor by naming its annual community donor awards as the “Eleanor Taylor Awards”. |

$200,000 ENDOWMENT FUND CAMPAIGN Although there is NOT an envelope in this Fall Newsletter, we hope that you will consider making a one-time donation to the Free Clinic’s 2007 20th Anniversary Endowment Fund Campaign. It is intended to increase the Free Clinic’s endowed funds from its current level of $82,000 to an amount closer to $300,000. The annual interest from this fund would be increased and continue to be used to defray expenses in the annual operating budget. However, the principal would not be touched. Since 2007 is our 20th Anniversary Year, we have been suggesting that Free Clinic supporters consider an additional $20, $200, $2,000 or perhaps we could achieve one $200,000. Of course, we would accept any amount! Please consider providing some “extra support” for this campaign in 2007. |

HILLCATS SKYBOX NIGHT - AUGUST 15 This annual fundraising event, which was coordinated by board members, “Pete” Warren and Stuart Turille, raised $4,500 for the Free Clinic this year at Calvin Falwell Field at City Stadium. The event was attended by over 150 friends and supporters of the clinic who paid $30/each to attend the game, sit in the skyboxes, and enjoy a ball park buffet. The Hillcats defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by 6-2. The donated boxes are “purchased” by companies and individuals in order to support the Free Clinic. Donors of food and other refreshments for the event included: Tri-Tech Labs ($1,000) and Wal-Mart in Lynchburg & Bedford – ($1,000). Donors of their skyboxes to support the Free Clinic included: AREVA, Bankers Steel, Billy Craft Honda, Edgehill Plantation, Milton Realty, Ted Counts Realty, Westover Dairy, Roger Green, and Bill Litchfield. Purchasers of entire boxes for the evening included: Chuck Haney (2 boxes), Flippen, Porter & Bruce (David Gardner), Lynchburg Family Practice (Dr. Patricia Pletke), Centra Health Pharmacy (Dr. Fred Blanchard), William “Sandy” Carrington family, and Mary Jane and Charlie Pryor. SPECIAL thanks are extended to Paul Sunwall, Hillcats’ General Manager, for his assistance in coordinating this event. |

GIFT-IN-KIND DONORS The Free Clinic is fortunate to have many friends in the community who choose to support the clinic with “Gifts-in-Kind”. The clinic routinely accepts large quantities of such things as medical supplies, dental supplies, office supplies, cleaning supplies, sealed medications, as well as medical, dental, and office equipment. Hundreds of medical, dental, and pharmaceutical professionals donated thousands of hours of services worth millions of dollars EVERY YEAR (see the list of volunteers on our website by clicking HERE! Here is a partial list of some of the more unusual gifts: Michael’s Carpet World has provided carpeting, flooring, and labor at greatly reduced costs; L.G. Flint Construction has given free building services to the clinic; Crist Electronics donated the installation of a musical sound system in our dental suite; Bob Dozier, retired Associate Superintendent of Public Schools provides volunteer maintenance services; and several church groups have painted walls and rooms. All “Gifts-in Kind” are extremely valuable and appreciated as they enable more of the cash dollars donated to the Free Clinic to be used for the direct medical, dental, and pharmaceutical care of patients! |

OUTREACH PROGRAMS The Free Clinic regularly conducts outreach programs in the Central Virginia community. These events are designed to publicize the clinic to possible patients and donors as well as to provide some educational health experiences to community members. In July, the Free Clinic outreach team provided information and/or health services at Health Fairs at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church, Bass Elementary School in Lynchburg and at Nelson County Senior/Junior High School. The team is scheduled to attend events at the Jesus Center in Appomattox and Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg in September. In the past, we have participated in the Monocan Pow Wow, at The Daily Bread, at Day in the Park, at Jubilee Family Development Center and at events at many other area churches. Please contact the clinic at 847-5866 if you want further information. |
