Awards and Citations

UVA Health System Community Service Award Lesley McPhatter, MS, RD, CSR dietician and 20 year Free Clinic volunteer, was presented with this award in July 2007 at a dinner in the Rotunda at the University of Virginia.
Honorary Membership - Lynchburg Dental Society  In May 2007 at the Annual Meeting of the Lynchburg Dental Society, Robert "Bob" Barlow, Executive Director, was awarded Honorary Membership in the Lynchburg Dental Society.
The Ron Dolan "Spirit of Caring" Award Presented to Dr. D.H. "Pete" Warren, Board Member, in March 2007 at the United Way of Central Virginia's Annual Breakfast Ceremony.
A United Way "Shining Star" Award Presented to the Free Clinic at the United Way's Annual Award Breakfast in March 2007. This award is presented to non-profits and companies that provide exemplary support to the United Way.
VHCF UNSUNG HEROES AWARD Drs. Augustus Petticolas and William Riley have been selected as co-recipients of the Virginia Health Care Foundation's Unsung Heroes Award for leading our Dental Team. They have led over 50 dentists, 25 dental staff, and hundreds of student "externs" from the VCU School of Dentistry in providing dental services to hundreds of patients at the clinic. The number of patient visits has quintupled. Drs. Petticolas and Riley are now providing leadership to double the number of dental operatories by late 2006. This award along with a $2,000 grant for the Free Clinic will be presented in Richmond in April 2006.
 George Taylor Stewart III Chamber of Commerce Award Dr. D. L. "Pete" Warren received this award in January 2005 for his strong service to the community. Dr. Warren has served as Fundraising Chair on the Board of Directors at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia for the past four years.

Volunteer of the Year Award
In Summer 2004, Dr James Wright, Endocrinology volunteer physician for 17 years was honored as one of 4 Virginians to receive the MSV prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award. Dr. Wright has visited the clinic at least twice a month for 4-5 hours per evening to attend to the important needs of diabetic patients. Dr. Wright also serves on the Free Clinic's Board of Directors and was the principal founder of the MedsHelp Program. 
W. David Crews Award The Free Clinic was the 2004 recipient of the United Way of
Central Virginia W. David Crews Award. This award is "in recognition of the Free Clinic's outstanding work during the year to focus upon its mission and provide effective outcomes for its clients."
United Way Award The United Way presented the Free Clinic with the GOLD Award for the third successive year (2004) for 100% giving by the FC staff to the annual UW Campaign.
Nancy L. Sorrells Award Jane Ayers, Office/Program Manager was the recipient of this individual award at the United Way Annual Meeting. It is presented to an employee of a non-profit agency, who has demonstrated loyalty, trustworthiness, hard work, and perseverance with their respective agency and the Central Virginia community.
Exemplary Program October 2003 - The Free Clinic of Central Virginia (FC) was recognized as an "Exemplary Program" by the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) for its new Dental Program in partnership with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. This program uses dental student "externs" from the School of Dentistry to provide 63 appointment "slots" on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at the FC in Lynchburg. The "externs" are supervised by 21 volunteer professors/mentors, who are licensed dentists practicing in Central Virginia. The program saw 289 different persons for 503 visits in its first four months of operation.
Outstanding Individual Fundraiser Award November 2003 - Dr. D. L. "Pete" Warren, Chair of the Fundraising Committee and a member of the FC Board of Directors, received the "Outstanding Individual Fundraiser Award" from the central Virginia Association of Professional Fundraisers (AFP).
United Way Award
The Free Clinic received the 2002 GOLD Award at the United Way annual meeting on February 11. This award is given to businesses that contribute $100 or more per employee to the United Way; the FC staff earned this recognition for the second year in a row.
