GREATER LYNCHBURG COMMUNITY TRUST
AWARDS $14,000 TO THE FREE CLINICThe Greater Lynchburg Community Trust (GLTC) announced last week that they will be awarding $14,000 in new grant money to the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, Inc. The support will come from five different interest bearing funds within the GLTC: The William and Nancy S. Nelson Fund; the Kenneth L. and Bertha S. White Fund; the Frances Cortright Stowers Charitable Fund, the Thomas P. and Lewise S. Parsley Fund; and the Rosalind and L. John Denney Fund. All of these families have been and/or are still residents of Central Virginia.
The money will be utilized to support the new daytime dental program. This program, which was initiated in August 2003, in partnership with the V.C.U. School of Dentistry, Centra Health, and 20 plus local volunteer dentists was established with an initial grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF). Dr. William Riley is the "Dean" of this program. It provides dental exams, dental hygiene work, restorative work (fillings), and extraction of teeth for persons eligible for Free Clinic services. It has quadrupled the available dental services for this population, and it will hopefully be supported by other community organizations in order to remain "on-going" program in our community. The gift is also designed to enable the Free Clinic to provide continuous outreach educational programs in the community. These include, but they are not limited to Health Fairs, Health Screenings (blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol), and/or Breast Cancer Programs, which educate people on health related issues and publicize the existence of the Free Clinic in Lynchburg. Outreach programs are open to everyone.
The Free Clinic (a 501 3(c) non-profit agency), which is located at 1016 Main Street in downtown Lynchburg, provides medical, dental, and pharmaceutical services for eligible low-income persons from the City of Lynchburg, and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell.
