FREE CLINIC OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA, INC. (FCCV) - LYNCHBURG
(Dental and Dental Hygiene Rotation)

Hours and Attendance:

Dental and dental hygiene students will have an assigned rotation at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, Inc. The rotation is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week from June through spring break and Thursday and Friday each week from after spring break through April. Each rotation assignment will span a two-week period. Students are expected to attend all scheduled rotation sessions. If a student misses the rotation, or any part of the rotation, he or she will be responsible to contact the appropriate individuals and reschedule the rotation experience.

Students who wish to switch a rotation must switch the entire rotation (all assigned days). Rotation change forms are available from Lyons. All rotation changes must be signed by the Director of Preceptorship Programs.

Description:

The Free Clinic of Central Virginia serves individuals who have an income at 200% of the poverty level or lower. Individuals who receive their care at FCCV do not have health or dental insurance, but may receive Medicaid or Medicare. The patient population ranges in age from 18 to 75+ years and are individuals who are considered underserved in health and dental care. The experiences at this site will provide opportunity for dental and dental hygiene students to work with a medically underserved population. This rotation should be viewed as an opportunity to provide quality care and caring for individuals who are unable to access health care in any other way.

Housing Information:

1. Housing is provided through a partnership with Centra Health’s Virginia Baptist Hospital (VBH).

2. Someone will meet you at the Free Clinic on arrival and provide specific directions to the housing at the Barker-Cowling (Pathways) Building at Virginia Baptist Hospital. The location is 3300 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503.

3. Keys to the rooms at the Barker-Cowling (Pathways) Building at Centra Health’s Virginia Baptist Hospital (VBH) will be issued at the Free Clinic upon arrival - usually Tuesday or Wednesday p.m. Keys must be returned to the Hospital Switchboard or the Free Clinic on the last day of the extern’s rotation – usually Friday p.m. Externs will receive specific directions to the housing facility from staff at the Free Clinic.

4. The dental and dental hygiene externs will be assigned to rooms on the fifth floor of the dormitory. The floor is coed, with separate bathrooms for males and females.

5. Externs are responsible for their own linen (sheets, towels, pillowcases, etc.) and toiletries. The beds are single and may be a bunk bed.

6. Free parking at VBH is available in the parking garage behind the hospital.

7. There is an internet connection in the mentor/professors office at the FC. (Sentence deleted about room access) If preference is to use Centra Health’s internet data connection, externs must go to the library, main lobby, or the cafeteria and use the designated connections in those locations.

8. No alcoholic beverages are permitted and smoking is permitted outside of the facility/buildings only.


Externs may wish to make other housing arrangements with the understanding that any cost incurred is the responsibility of the individual extern. You must let the Director of the free clinic know if you make your own housing arrangements.

General Information:

1. All externs should report to the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, at 1016 Main Street in Lynchburg no later than 8:00 p.m. on the Tuesday evening (or 6:00 p.m. if arriving on a Wednesday evening) preceding the two-week rotation to get keys, logistics, directions, etc.

Externs may elect to arrive by 8:00 a.m. on the first morning of the week that they work, but this will require departing Richmond by 5:30 a.m. The mileage has been measured as 120 miles, please allow 2 ½ hours for the drive.

If you are planning on driving to Lynchburg the morning of the rotation assignment, you must let Mr. Barlow know so he will not wait for you at the clinic on Tuesday (Wednesday) evening.

2. Externs are encouraged to travel as a group. Depending on the number of externs traveling to the Free Clinic, the driver of one or two vehicles will each receive a gasoline reimbursement check (TOTAL GAS MONEY = $60). If there are 4 – 6 externs, two (2) checks will be issued. If there are 3 or fewer externs, one (1) check will be issued. The Executive Director should be notified of the designated driver(s). The mileage reimbursement will be given to the identified driver(s) on Thursday.

3. Parking at the Free Clinic is at no cost by utilizing the Free Clinic’s designated parking spaces.

4. Each extern will receive $15.00/day stipend for meals. Stipends for meal costs will be distributed on Thursday each week. Externs may use a discount card with the VBH cafeteria to purchase meals at a discounted employee rate. The card will be issued upon arrival.

5. The Free Clinic workday will begin at 8:00 a.m. on each Wednesday morning with a meeting (Thursday if the rotation is a Thursday, Friday rotation). On the first Wednesday (Thursday), an orientation to the clinic will be held in the downstairs classroom. On the second Wednesday (Thursday), the meeting will review the first week and discuss any changes, improvements and /or modifications for the second week.
6. Appointments will be scheduled in the six (6) treatment rooms from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

7. Adjunct faculty, who are dentists in the central Virginia area, will staff and supervise the clinical activities Wednesday through Friday. Dr. William Riley will arrange the schedule.

8. Drs. Augustus Petticolas, Jr. and William Riley are Co-directors of the adjunct faculty component of the externship.

Ms. Ashley Milstead, a dental assistant and employee of the Free Clinic, will provide support services during the rotation.

Mr. Robert Barlow, Executive Director of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, serves as coordinator and director for the overall program.

From VCU School of Dentistry, there are several ways to get to the Free Clinic of Central Virginia:
1. Via Interstate – this is the least confusing, especially for the first trip to FCCV:
a. Take Interstate 64 west from Richmond to the Route 29 (exit 118A) near Charlottesville
b. Take Route 29 South to Lynchburg
c. Take the Sweet Briar College/Madison Heights Exit in Amherst to Route 29 Business. Follow Route 29 Business across the James River.
d. Main Street is the first exit after you cross the James River on Route 29 Business (Exit 1, Main Street, Historic Downtown, Riverfront).
e. Go left at the stop, the Free Clinic is on the right between 11th and 10th Streets
f. Turn right into the parking lot located behind the clinic building.

2. From the West End of Richmond if you don’t like Interstates:
a. Take Route 60 West to Route 29 South in Amherst
b. Follow c – f above….
